Narrative:
Mike Goodstein heads the Washington, D.C. office for Resolution Law Group with lead counsel responsibilities in a wide variety of environmental matters for public and private clients. These include litigation involving federal and state environmental laws, toxic torts, property damage, insurance coverage and inverse condemnation. In addition, he participates in the overall management of the firm.
In 2007, Mr. Goodstein was recognized as a top Washington, D.C. environmental attorney in a survey of his peers conducted by Washingtonian magazine. Recently, he was selected by the Attorney General of North Carolina to represent the state in a regional air pollution reduction initiative.
Prior to joining Resolution Law Group, Mr. Goodstein served with the United States Justice Department in the Environmental Enforcement Section for 12 years. The John Marshall Award, one of the Department of Justice’s highest honors, was twice awarded to Mr. Goodstein for outstanding legal achievement. He has also received the Gold Medal from the Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency for his contributions to the Clean Water Act enforcement program.
While serving with the Justice Department, Mr. Goodstein was lead counsel for the United States on a number of landmark cases under the Superfund law, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act. These cases included United States and Texas v. Koch Industries, which involved numerous oil spills from pipelines in which the government obtained a record $30 million civil penalty. Mr. Goodstein also served as Senior Attorney in United States v. Smithfield Foods, which resulted in a civil penalty of over $12 million, the highest Clean Water Act penalty ever assessed after trial.
Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Mr. Goodstein was an Assistant County Attorney in Miami, Florida, representing Metropolitan Dade County in environmental, land-use and labor matters.
